About Steps in Life
A progressive school rooted in the belief that education should nurture the whole childmind, body, and spirit.

Our Founder
Michelle Renee
Michelle Renee founded Steps in Life with a vision to transform how children experience education. After years of working in traditional systems, she recognized that children thrive when learning connects to their natural curiosity and real-world experiences.
Her philosophy centers on balance, academics, creativity, emotional growth, movement, and real-life skills woven into every day. This holistic approach nurtures children from the inside out, preparing them not just for tests, but for life.
"Education is more than academics, it is a balance of creativity, emotion, movement, and real-life experience."
Teacher Ceci
Hola! My name is Celia, but I go by Ceci. I am a native of Costa Rica and grew up in the Pérez Zeledón, San Juan de Dios area on a farm with many animals. I have lived in Uvita for 16 years where I completed my university studies and work as an educator. For several years now, I have taught Spanish as a second language to students, young and old, from all over the world. I also have worked in the tourism sector as a tourist guide. I love spending time with my son, reading, going to the beach, watching sunsets, eating gallo pinto, and saying hello with “Pura Vida”.
When asked about her teaching philosophy, Ceci says:
I consider education the basis of society and therefore love being an educator. To me, the teaching method is very simple because we are learning every day. My motto: “Teaching for life” provides a foundation for education where values such as discipline, responsibility, and commitment are essential. I think the independence and autonomy of the student during learning are essential. My commitment as a teacher is to play an active role in self-discovery while the student is expanding communication, respect, order, cooperation, and security. I also support practical habits and health for the benefit of educational inclusion in both group and individual development.

Teacher Gaby
My name is Gabriela, AKA Teacher Gaby, and I am proud to be a Steps in Life teacher!! I am from Miramar Puntarenas, received a Bachelor's Degree in Education in English teaching. I have worked with students of all ages and have been in education since the year 2000. I have had the opportunity of working in Costa Rica and in Duluth MN.
I have a true passion for working with our students!! Helping each child progress in all areas of their development, academic, social, language, and motor, is a challenge that I am honored to accept daily. I strive to create a community of learners that encourages this growth in a positive, fun environment.
Personally, I have two fantastic children who are 22, and 16 years old, the oldest is a teacher as well and the youngest is in 10th grade this year in San José. I also have a very important little animal that I see like my son. He is a one-and-a-half-year-old Chihuahua which brings so much joy to my life! I also enjoy cross stitch, cooking, music, relaxing at the beach, and spending time with friends and family.
When asked about her teaching philosophy, Gaby says:
As a teacher, it's essential to be adaptable and flexible, understanding that each student is unique and learns in their own way. Embracing creativity and innovation can make learning fun and engaging for children. By fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom culture, teachers can help students feel comfortable expressing themselves and taking risks in their learning journey.
Ultimately, a great teaching revolves around the idea of empowering students to become lifelong learners. Encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and a growth mindset can set students up for success not only academically but also in life. So, let's inspire young minds, celebrate their achievements, and create a bright future together!
